{"product_id":"argyle-cut-and-playfair-stairs-the-rocks","title":"Argyle Cut and Playfair Stairs, The Rocks, 1901–10","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe Argyle Cut was hewn through the sandstone ridge dividing The Rocks so that Argyle Street could join its eastern and western sides; convict chain gangs began the work in 1843 and the passage opened to traffic about 1864, its rubble later used in local buildings and the walls of Circular Quay. The photograph forms part of a Public Works Department survey of The Rocks published in 1901, and shows the stone arch carrying a street across the cut with the Playfair Stairs rising alongside it and men resting on the steps.
