Boat sheds and houses at Long Nose Point, Birchgrove, c. 1880–90

The view looks across the entrance to Lane Cove at Long Nose Point, where a row of boat sheds, wharves and buildings lines the foreshore below timber houses on the ridge. The point at the north-eastern end of the Balmain peninsula had been part of a grant to George Whitfield after 1792 and carried the descriptive name Long Nose Point until it was renamed Yurulbin in 1994. By the 1880s it was in maritime and industrial use; the boatbuilder Frederick Yates, then working from Louisa Street, Balmain, appears at the centre of this photograph. Shipbuilding continued on the site into the twentieth century under Morrison & Sinclair, until the land was cleared and reshaped as a public park from the early 1970s.
