The block shown is a continuous two-storey terrace of shops with steeply pitched gables and an arcaded ground floor; the painted shopfront lettering names W. C. Cailey, general contractor, copper smith and ships plumber, together with a beef shop and Nelson's carbonating works. Horse-drawn carts stand at the kerb on a roadway carrying tram tracks, in a street otherwise empty of traffic.
