Lamb had married Henrietta Octavia Smith in 1859; their first child, Emma, was born in 1860, the year given to the photograph. An inscription on the mount records the group on the verandah as John Lamb, his wife with her first child in her arms, her mother Mrs Thomas Smith, and 'old John' the gardener.
