Samuel Elyard signed and dated the sheet 'Goat Island 1865 S.E.' in pencil at the lower left. When it was painted the island served as the colony's gunpowder store, its convict-built magazine buildings dating from the 1830s; it later became the Sydney Harbour Trust's headquarters and a working shipyard.
