Rae, John, 1813-1900

Open parkland fills the foreground, where figures walk, sit and play across the cleared ground inside a timber post-and-rail fence, with a Gothic church and a separate square belfry tower set back at the edge of the park and windmills on the distant skyline. A caption in a later hand identifies the scene as Hyde Park, St Mary's Cathedral and belfry, and the Woolloomooloo (Barker's) windmills. The view is one of John Rae's series of Sydney scenes dated 1842.
