Camp Cove, on the southern side of Port Jackson adjacent to Inner South Head, is regarded as the probable site of the first European landfall in the harbour, where Governor Phillip's party camped in January 1788; the headland, also called Green Point after the land assigned to Edward Laing in 1793, carried fortifications in the 1870s and 1880s.
