kogarah-superior-public-school-kogarah
Kogarah Superior Public School, Kogarah, c. 1900–27

The building shown in this Broadhurst postcard was opened on 18 December 1891 as Kogarah Superior Public School, replacing a schoolhouse and master's residence built in Regent Street in 1876 and demolished in 1900; the district's first school had met in St Paul's Church building in the 1870s. Department of Education records described the new school as Jacobean in style, of buff brick with dark brick and stone dressings under red Marseilles tiles. Enrolments reached about 1,500 by 1909; the girls' section broke away in 1916 to form St George Girls High School, the infants and primary departments moved to a Gladstone Street site in 1954, and in 1963 the boys' and girls' schools combined as Kogarah High School, which still occupies the 1891 building. The card was issued by Broadhurst Post Card Publishers, whose series of Kogarah views is dated about 1900-1927.
