Merlin and Bayliss reached Sydney from Victoria in September 1870 and travelled New South Wales photographing towns, streets, public buildings and businesses, before moving to the goldfields town of Hill End in March 1872. The album, which the company may have issued as a prize in a competition advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald of 12 May 1871, was presented to the Mitchell Library in 2001.
