North Shore Gas Works and gasholders, Neutral Bay, 1935–45

The North Shore Gas Company's gasworks at Neutral Bay, with two gasholders and the works buildings in the foreground. A small gasworks was established on the site fronting Neutral Bay in the 1870s; the North Shore Gas Company took control in the 1880s and expanded it, though a larger plant at Oyster Cove, Waverton superseded it in 1917. The Neutral Bay works ceased operating in the 1930s, and in March 1942 the Commonwealth took possession and converted the site into a torpedo factory. It later became the HMAS Platypus submarine base and reopened to the public as Sub Base Platypus in 2018.
