{"product_id":"sailing-ships-at-the-circular-quay-wharves-sydney","title":"Sailing ships at the Circular Quay wharves, Sydney, c. 1870s","description":"\u003cp\u003eBy the 1870s the berths around Circular Quay were busy with sailing ships loading wool and passengers, and the western shore was lined with bond stores and shipping offices. Much of that shoreline was man-made: between 1837 and 1844 Captain George Barney of the Royal Engineers built a seawall and used convict labour to reclaim about four and a half hectares of mudflats behind it, the fill dug from the sandstone ridge that became the Argyle Cut. Shipping expanded sharply in the 1850s with wool exports and the gold discoveries, and the quay was extended around its western bank so that the semicircle closed into a full ring.
