Built by the British firm Dorman Long under John Bradfield of the NSW Department of Public Works, the bridge opened in 1932, so this scene records the harbour after the crossing was complete; the small sailing craft in mid-harbour belong to the waterway's long use for recreation as well as shipping. Before European settlement the shores of the harbour were the country of Eora clans including the Gadigal and Cammeraygal.
