Sam Hood photographed this framed Chinese illustrated poster, catalogued in his collection among subjects including a "Chinese Kuomintang, WWII show". The poster depicts the Lugou Bridge near Beijing, its name given in the inscription on the pillar at right and long known in Europe as the Marco Polo Bridge after the traveller praised it in the 13th century. Biplanes fly above the arched stone span while soldiers, rickshaw pullers, camel drivers and motorists share the roadway; in 1937 the bridge was the site of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, which marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
