An audience sits and reclines on grass and bare ground at night, leaning against the trunks of eucalypts, with folding deck chairs stacked behind them. A man lies across a woman's lap in the foreground while others watch something out of frame. The photograph was made at the North Sydney Music Shell in St Leonards Park on 12 November 1948, the day before the shell was officially opened; designed by Peddle Thorp and Walker and completed that year, it went on to host band recitals, orchestras and carols into the 1960s.
